CIRCUS Magazine

Chet Flippo, a founding editor of Rolling Stone, credited Howard Bloom with “single-handedly creating a new magazine genre: the heavy metal magazine.” Bloom was editor of CIRCUS from 1971 to 1973, a monthly American magazine devoted to rock and roll and heavy metal music. It was published from 1966 to 2006 and in its heyday the magazine had a full-time editorial staff that included some of the biggest names in rock journalism, such as Paul Nelson, Judy Wieder, David Fricke, and Kurt Loder, and rivaled Rolling Stone in sales. In his two years as editor, Bloom invented a radically new format for the magazine and increased its sales by 211%. The Bloom format was later imitated by Hit Parader and by Creem Magazine.
